Leaim’s Inguinal hernia operation
By Betty | February 19, 2012
Leaim was born with a left inguinal hernia. Also known as a scrotal inguinal hernia. Inguinal hernias develop as the result of a weakness, tear, gap or opening in the muscle wall of the lower abdomen or groin at a region called the inguinal canal. As a result of this opening in the muscle, the contents of the abdomen, such as intestine, may protrude through the muscle creating localized pain and/or a bulge. The pain and bulge may be constant or intermittent in duration and mild or severe in intensity. Inguinal Hernias are located in the lower abdomen (right side, left side or both ) just above the leg crease, near or adjacent to the pubic area. Leaim’s was also affecting his scrotal area. Leaim was born with his. It was on just the left side. It was large as the doctor described it as the size of a grapefruit or softball. It was not discovered until about 2 months ago. His surgery was today to repair it. March 22, 2010. This is his “story”

@TeamKilday That’s exactly what happened to my son. I had started potty training him and noticed 1 of his testicles would enlarge at times and even turn purple-ish. When he lay on his back and relaxed for a few second the swelling went down. If I tickled him to make him strain a bit/push with his abdominal muscles his testicle would swell again. I then placed my hand on his testicle and could gently manually feel the intestine going into his scrotal sack. I knew he had a hernia right away.

I think we’re heading down that track soon with my 2 year old. A few days ago his right testicle started becoming enlarged and around the pelvis started swelling. Having an ultrasound tomorrow but from what I’ve seen and read on the internet, it’s probably a hernia. See how your son reacted after surgery is exactly how my son has been in hospital once before. I’m not looking forward to the surgery if he definitely has a hernia, but good to know what to expect. Thanks!

@mikebythesun good luck and I hope your son does well!
February 19th, 2012 at 8:17 pm
@mikebythesun leaim’s recovery took a lil longer then expected cause some how 1of the instruments used during the surgery was contaminated & he got an internal infection…so bad his incision opened up and was draining…they did a culture on the infection and that’s how we found out what caused it. the strain of infection is only found on contaminated instruments.Leaim was pretty much his normal self even with the infection.he was just as active as before surgery about 2 days after surgery.

How long was Leaim’s recovery? Was he able to act like his normal self when you got home, or was he laid up a bit? My son is 2 and is having this done soon. He had eye muscle surgery 2 weeks ago, and was jumping off the couch the same night. I expect this to be a bit different, though! Thanks for sharing his story.

@veronica851 Thank you for watching. I was hopeful this video would help others that may be in this situation cope with any fear they may have. I am glad you watched thank you for your comment.

I used to have hernia at a similar spot as your son. My maid found a bump at my abdominal area while bathing me when I was around 3-4 years. All I could remember at the hospital was my dad carrying me to get a jab around my wrist area, in a room. After that, I woke up after the surgery(I think) and saw a nurse checking my pulse rate. I wish I had a video recorded like that so I could remember what happened to me.

@phorcydes oh really….thanks…my son actually have both of the hydrocele and hernia…
February 20th, 2012 at 1:43 am
@Lfamily01 They were born with it. These kinds of hernias cause them no pain at all. I didn’t notice it until I started potty training my son. He was over 2 years of age. I noticed his left testicular area was swelling and turning purple while he was without a diaper during the day. I did a little research and found it could have been that of 2 things. Hydrocele or an Inguinal hernia. I looked up both and figured it was a hernia and took him to the doc the next day. sue enough it was.
February 20th, 2012 at 1:50 am
i never seem to notice, but does it hurt or makes him uncomfortable?
February 20th, 2012 at 1:50 am
@Lfamily01 it has been about a month and a half since the surgery and he is 100% now. he was acting normal like 2 days after the surgery. he has a little scar and thats it. good luck! I’m sure your son will do fine! it was scary tho i wont lie but it all turned out great.
February 20th, 2012 at 2:00 am
aww..ur son is so adorable…i just found out my 1 year old son has it too, and is going to surgery…i was so scare…hope this isn’t a bad thing…and he’ll heal and live life normally….hows ur son now?
February 20th, 2012 at 2:02 am
@heatherwaitgirl Yeah she was something else lol He is walking a little funny today like maybe his junk hurts but the doctor said that would happen because he had to cut into the scrotal sack to remove the hernia lining.
February 20th, 2012 at 2:55 am
@TiffanyPanini Thank you so much!
February 20th, 2012 at 3:50 am

February 20th, 2012 at 4:33 am
OMG what a stupid nurse not knowing how to work her own equipment. I can’t believe it was the size of a grapefruit!!! I was just wondering how he was feeling later that night. Looks like it’ll heal just fine.
February 20th, 2012 at 5:24 am
I might have to have this done, what are the costs you guys ended up with?
February 20th, 2012 at 6:01 am

February 20th, 2012 at 6:47 am
sucks, im almost 23, last year had an umbilical hernia surgery now i got this one i think. the lump and my testicle hurts and i cant sneeze or cough
February 20th, 2012 at 6:49 am
@TheDKPhantom Hey man its not that bad. I just got it done last week. You’ll be sore for a few weeks, and your nuts will be really achy, but I was up n walkin around a few days later. They do give you some good drugs! lol I got Percocet, which made me sleep a lot! As long as you take it easy and don’t try and lift anything for like 4 weeks, everything will be fine. PLUS, when they repair it, you’ll NEVER get another hernia on that side again!
February 20th, 2012 at 7:28 am
I’m only 16 I’m really nervous I really don’t want to get this done but it’s really painful and swollen
February 20th, 2012 at 7:50 am
@PSwarrior25 How did it go?
February 20th, 2012 at 7:56 am
@JediGTI Oh I am trust me.
February 20th, 2012 at 8:56 am
@PSwarrior25 Good luck. I was really nervous about it but after talking to a few people who’ve had it done I felt better. It’s not as bad as it looks. Just be ready to rest for about 3 full days.
February 20th, 2012 at 9:53 am
@JediGTI Thanks. I am having my operation on Thursday most probably. Wish me luck.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:15 am
@PSwarrior25 Do you have an inguinal hernia? Let me know if you want any input. It wasn’t as bad a I thought it would be. Just make sure you get the laparoscopic surgery. The open one is VERY painful from what I’ve heard.
February 20th, 2012 at 11:12 am
I just had this fixed on 1/11/12. The surgery went very well. The first day isn’t too bad…just get home quick and find a nice recliner and put in front of the TV. The second day was painful but more of a sore type pain. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m on the third as I type this I can move around the house no problem but still taking it easy. Should be good to go by Monday 1/16/12. Happy healing. Mine was an indirect repair with an umbilical one as well.
February 20th, 2012 at 12:05 pm

February 20th, 2012 at 2:30 pm
Just had it, it sucks, but I am healing fast, best luck to you xO
February 20th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
@segovian No worries man!Seems to be an easy one with no complications. Good luck
February 20th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
I just got a hernia, today. I’m going to have surgery later this week. This sucks, FML.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:08 pm
@Flotillaattack I don’t know every detail of this operation however to my knowledge, a standard incision is made over the inguinal canal and the intestinal loop is pulled up from the scrotum. To my knowledge, if an incision was made in the scrotum, another incision would have to made in either right or left lower quadrant of the abdomen anyways and the whole point of any surgical operation is to reduce the amount of incisions necessary. So I would not worry about “scrotal incisions”.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:29 pm
@windk100 Hey, a lot of people prefer GA and that’s perfectly fine. I personally just find it more complicated and also fear anesthesia awareness so if I were to ever have this operation, I would request local anesthesia + sedation.
February 20th, 2012 at 4:38 pm
@eBiology First time for me to have GA, breathing tube, and outside of some mouth roof and throat soreness, no problems! Didn’t seem particularly complicated from my vantage point.
February 20th, 2012 at 5:33 pm
@HOPEKMEYER19 I had the open surgery done this month on MY birthday and am feeling fine.
February 20th, 2012 at 5:42 pm
@evilmind5 I had the open surgery last Thursday and been back at desk work since Tuesday. Pain was/is very minimal and my “scar” is so thin it is almost invisible and 4″ or less long – scar length depends on how large the hernia is. I didn’t have ultrasound – yours sounds like it was a much more serious case; I would venture most folks would prefer outpatient surgery than emergency surgery for a strangulated intestine any day. I don’t see how anyone could afford surgery w/o insurance.
February 20th, 2012 at 5:55 pm
@zomzom26 I had the open, not laparoscopic surgery, am 42 and it was first time to have general anesthesia. I used to be deathly afraid of anesthesia, but this is my second digestive procedure in a month which required some type of anesthesia and both times I was out like a baby. Hopefully you can have some good conversations with you physicians; the outpatient surgery isn’t that bad and if you haven’t had any prior bad experiences with general anesthesia, you shouldn’t need to worry.
February 20th, 2012 at 6:46 pm
@budzag I had it last Thursday and have been back to work since this Tuesday. As you, not even very sore, but it my case I didn’t need a bucket. The anesthesiologist cautioned me that some folk’s digestive systems are more sensitive to the anesthesia than others, but I essentially didn’t have any problems. Not everyone will need a bucket.
February 20th, 2012 at 7:00 pm
having this tmr, wish me luck!
